More on the Masters of Photography Project

I wanted to provide more guidance for the Masters of Photography Project.

  • Include all 5 finished photos in one blog post.
  • Include all your original photos in the same post. (You might need to include more than 5 original photos since some students combined pictures to create a final picture.)
  • You needed to take the pictures you are including in the post.
  • If you are including pictures from your master photographer, you need permission.
  • Title "Masters of Photography - The Photographer You Chose"

In the same blog post, write a brief description about your master photographer. Discuss these topics and questions. I want to thank the students from 2nd period, especially Aashna, for helping me draft the questions below.

About the Photographer

  • Time Period
  • Location
  • Object/Subject (nature, people, war, scientific achievement)
  • What makes the photographer unique?

Your View

  • Why did you choose the photographer?
  • How did the photographer inspire you?
  • How did this change while working on the project?

Movie Monday December 8 - Robert Capa

It's another Movie Monday!
Today we are watching our third installment of "In Love and War."

You will submit one piece of paper for your entire group.

1-10. Each group writes ten (10) interesting facts from today's film. Take turns. Do not write twice in a row unless you are the only person in your group today. We will watch about twenty minutes of the film today (until the 1:06 mark.)

11. View Losing The Media in Afghanistan slideshow on Lens and choose the image that is most similar to one taken by Robert Capa. On your paper, list the photo number 11. You do not need to explain your reasoning. Your group must agree. Since all photographs were taken by Magnum photographer Larry Towell, your choice will probably be valid.

Turn in one piece of paper for the group.

1. Robert Capa dated Ingrid Bergman. (#33)
...
10. Robert Capa was not his birth name (#99)

11. x of 19 (which photo is most "Capaesque")

Masters of Photography Project

After you have completed the student checklist and Mr. Farley has approved your group's work, your group may choose a Master Photographer from the International Photography Hall of Fame Museum.

In addition to this list, you may also choose Irving Penn.

Once a photographer has been chosen by any of the four classes, that person may not be selected by any other group.

Masters Assignment

For this assignment, each group member will complete five photographs that are inspired or influenced by the master photographer chosen by the group.

Student will include five finished photos (along with the five original "before photos") in a blog post titled "Inspired by a Master - ___" In the post, describe how you edited the photo so that your original photo appeared similar to an image taken by the master photographer. Since many of the masters photographed with black and white film, your color digital files will probably need editing.

Each student will also write a short description of the photographer explaining why the photographer is considered a master and what the student learned from the project.

You may include links to the master photographers' images, but do not include their work unless you have permission.

ATPI Contest - or not

Some of you may choose to submit a photo to the ATPI contest. Even if you do not, you will send a photo to me with the specifications listed on the ATPI website.

This means that you must also choose a category for your photograph even if you do not apply for the Fall Contest.

If you wanted to submit to the contest, you must notify me by October 30th and submit by October 31st. Your grade will not be affected by your decision to submit.

Happy Halloween.

Homework - Photo Gallery Festival Review

Periods 2, 3, and 4

Review the Lens Photo Gallery, A Festival of Photos and Ideas in Africa.

Choose the best photo from the gallery and use academic language to support your position. You may write a five paragraph essay or create a list with arguments.

Clearly explain the photo you have chosen and submit homework at the beginning of class before you turn on a computer. I am more concerned that you provide a complete answer than a complete essay. I would rather read complete ideas than complete sentences.

Thank you,

bf

Portraits - More Than Candid

In the box above the section where you write the blog post, PLEASE TITLE THIS POST "Second Portrait." Some of you title your blog posts correctly. Please help those who are not doing this yet.

In the last week, two important photographers died. Both took portraits.

The first photographer was Magnum Photographer Rene Burri. Burri photographed Che Guevara, Pablo Picasso, Maria Callas, Ronald Reagan and many others. Burri even photographed Winston Churchill when Burri was thirteen.

Alfred Wertheimer, the photographer for Elvis Presley, died this week too. Alfred began photographing Elvis when Alfred was 26 and Elvis was 21. Elvis would become one of the most popular people in the history of the world. Wertheimer's "The Kiss" image is one of the most popular images of the 20th Century.

Both photographers were lucky; both worked hard to gain the trust of their subjects. Both photographers also knew how to use a camera. While both men were lucky, they were dilligent. Supposedly, Burri spent four years organizing the portrait shoot of Picasso.

Perhaps because I know that some photographers work for years to take a portrait, I hesitate to call this assignment "candid portraiture;" however, some students understand this term better than informal portraiture.

Here is one helpful example of an article about candid portraiture.

I also hesitate to use the word candid, because I remember Candid Camera. I loved the show, but "candid" meant staged or fake. Portraits should be real.

Self Portrait Project

Self-Portraits
Due October 10

The self-portrait has been part of the artist tradition for hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of years. Before cameras were invented, painters created self-portraits. Rembrant, Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo provide a few examples of artists who painted self-portraits. Musicians, writers and other artists created self-portraits.

I have my own version of self-portraits that I call Awkward Self-portraits. Sometimes I take casual pictures; other times I spend more time taking these images than it appears. I have many reasons for taking these pictures. I do it for fun, as a way of expression. I also figure that if my students are expected to reveal something about themselves, I might as well do the same.

Your teacher is not cool, but other people can show you an alternative. Here are some cool examples from the Photoshelter blog. I also encourage you to study Wendy Alas and her project. She shot many different self-portraits on different days. Every person feels different on different days and in different situations, so this is normal. Doing this type of project also help you learn about the project. Two days ago, we looked at the NY Times Lens gallery called "Selfies Against the Death Penalty." These images can provide further inspiration.

By Friday, submit a blog post with a photo that could be used for the ATPI self-portrait Contest. See the photo gallery. Save the photo in a SAFE PLACE so that you can submit if you wish.

You will be graded on content and appearance.

depth of field - shallow

Shallow Depth of Field

On September 29th, 2014, all four photography classes took pictures of me using a shallow depth of field. (I set the f/stop at 2.8) Due October 10, 2014.

Here are some examples from the day.

Photo by 2nd period, Shagun Srivastava

In your (new) groups, take pictures with a shallow depth of field. If you can adjust the f/stop, change it to the lowest setting. If you have a point and shoot, use the macro or portrait. Some camera phones allow you to select the focus.

Upload the photo to Camera Raw for any edits. Post the photo on your blog and list/ explain any of your edits. DUE October 10.

Another note: if "you have nothing else to do,"

Watch online lessons about depth of field, such as this one from Adorama Video or read this article from Digital Camera World.
You may study composition (search "photography" and "composition")
You may almost always research "the masters of photography." The Hall of Fame is a good place to start.
Please review the ATPI competition. Whether we submit to contest or not, you should know how to submit a photo to the competition. What are the categories? What file size would you submit? What dpi? What is dpi?

Movie Mondays - Dorothea Lange

On Monday September 29, 2014, our Photo 1 class will watch our third installment of Dorothea Lange - Grab a Hunk of Lightening.

Two weeks ago, we watched the first 16 minutes. Last week, we watched the next 16 minutes. If you missed any of the "Movie Mondays," I expect that you will watch the videos during your own time. I would also encourage my students to watch the video a few more times outside of class.

Destitute pea pickers in California. Mother of seven children. Age thirty-two. Nipomo, California

The photo above is commonly referred to as "Migrant Mother." This picture is one of the most popular images in American history. Do you know when, where and how it was taken? What does this image say? What is the story?

Often when students (or other people) download images from the internet, there are restrictions about how the pictures are used.

Do you know restrictions for this famous photo?

Note: I updated this blog on 2/3/15 for a grammatical error.

Create a Blogger Photo Blog

For Photo 1, Use Google Blogger and create a blog.

In the title, name the blog something that will help me identify you as a student in my photography class. You choose. You can also change the title later. (Beware, you cannot do the same with the web address.) More than one person can have the same title, but not the same web address.

In the address, choose something that you can remember. Once you choose the web address (or url), you cannot change it. Consider this choice wisely. The site will tell you if the address has already been taken.

For both the title and address, try to choose something that will help your teacher (that is Mr. Farley), identify you as a student in the class. Hopefully, you will also be able to remember your own title and web address.

Once you have done this part, experiment with the templates and bio information. You can upload a photo of yourself if wish. You can also start with the first photo assignment.

First Photo Assignment

Here is our first photo assignment.

The projects will often be written and edited during the first four periods after I have delivered the assignment to each class. Sometimes I will include links or other notes. Today I included the adjusted schedule since we are celebrating our school's 50th birthday.

So, here we go...

Many of you have already submitted photos to me. Many of the photos are excellent.

Today you will submit ONE photo per person that you have taken in the last few days during class that you also edited in Adobe Camera Raw.

Save the photo as a jpeg. Include your name and period in the file name and email subject line.

For example, the email subject could read, "Period 1, First Photo"
your photo could be titled, "YourFirstNamePd1.jpg"

In the body of your email, mention the Rule of Composition that you used.

Once you create your blog, create a blog post titled "First Photo Assignment, My First Rule"

Aileen Hsu from Period 1 took this photo of me last week. She is illustrating the "Rule of Thirds," which is her first rule of composition.

Thank you,

bf

I was a Warrior when I was a student ... a few years ago at a different school with different colors. We were purple and gold.

Note: backdated to September 16th
I also took the title from an old Dionne Warwick song, "Do You Know The Way To San Jose." Read more about the 1968 Grammy Awards here.
